A new blog and Day #1 of Maiden Voyage!

So.... another adventure...a new blog! For those who have followed our blog that we ran for our Monk restoration and time aboard her, welcome to our new place to blog! I bought our Monk 36 with the thought we would keep her for 20 years. Apparently that was not to be! Well, I guess that we could own it for a long time if no one buys her but I don't think it will take THAT long to sell her. :) I really enjoyed blogging about our restoration and time aboard our Monk 36 but realized after purchasing our "new" boat that the only problem was that her blog was boat name specific. We felt that name fit our Monk 36 perfectly but not the name we feel called to name our new boat. Looking forward into the future, we concluded that we may be better off utilizing a blog that is not boat name specific so that no matter what boat we have we can stay in one place on the web. Thus, our choosing our new blog name, www.TimeAboard.blogspot.com. Really, that is what all our boating blogs have been about...our time aboard our boat with our family and friends. Thus, the new name seems rather fitting I guess.

Right now we are cruising our "new" boat home to Island Cove Marina in Chattanooga. When I am not actively on the river I will blog with some details on how we came to get her which had, for us, some surprising turns of events but we are glad it all worked out. She was in Iuka, MS when we bought her the first week of January this year. Iuka is pretty much in the middle of nowhere (no offense Iukians!) 5 hour drive from Atlanta with no airports nearby. Despite the remote location, wow- talk about some amazing and beautiful boats!! Since Iuka is at the beginning of the Tennessee- Tom Bigbee waterway, they get some serious cruising boats. It is a 275 mile run from Iuka to Chattanooga. Not the longest trip but not a quick sunset cruise either. Due to lack of time and distance from us, we had the yard do a full service of engines and generator before we left. We were a little apprehensive of just hopping in and taking off (the boat has sat unused for a while) but happy to say everything is running great.
I will type a lot more details when we are back home but here are some pics from day #1, traveling from mile marker (MM) 215 to MM 260 to Steenston Marina on Wilson Lake.
Our son Caleb (9 years old) at the lower helm (I LOVE this lower helm!!!):

Underway in the morning with cloud cover:

Coffee in the pilothouse:

Pickwick Lake:

More Pickwick Lake...pretty remote:

Navigational aids. Love the little red/green channel marker that rotates for when going up or down river (was on the boat when we bought it):

Serious currents today! Major rains last few days and river is very high and flowing strong:

Coming into Wilson Lock as a barge was leaving...pretty close:

REALLY close to the barge due to narrow channel:

Approaching Wilson Lock, the deepest lock anywhere in eastern USA (93' rise):

Picture of me as we lock through:

Lock is full and we are raised up to the next level with gates about to open:

Sunset as we are at top of Wilson Lock:

Docked at the end of the day @ MM 260 at Steenston Marina on Lake Wilson. Small place but super nice owner. Caleb liked it b/c they had a ping pong ball table inside that he and his granddad got to play with for a while:

Docked at the end of day #1....a great day on the river and our first with our "new" boat and it ran great!!!!
